Simulating dead time in a motor drive application

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC21540

I would like to simulate gate drivers switching two IGBTs with a variable dead time. Using TINA is there a way to add a dead time in between switching the top and bottom IGBT?

  • Hi, Frazer,

There are numerous ways to do this... Two that come to mind:

    1. Put an RC in front of the logic input to the driver. This will effectively delay the signal coming in.

    2. Put a gate resistor between the driver and the IGBT. This will delay the switching of the IGBT. You can put a diode in series to make the delay asymmetric.

Do you have a particular gate driver you're looking at? We have some with built-in dead-time generators (UCC21540 for example).
