TIDA-060024: question

Part Number: TIDA-060024
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PGA460

Hello experts,

I have a question about TIDA-060024.
1. Is there non-detected objects? Can this TI-Design detect water and oil?
2. Can it covered this TI-Design by any material? Do you have a recommended material?

Best Regards,
Fujiwara

  • Hi Fujiwara,

    Responding to your questions:

    1) The ability to detect an object using ultrasonic time of flight is dependent on acoustic impedance mismatch. For instance, if you are using the TIDA-060024 to transmit an echo through air, then it is possible to detect most solids and liquids (including water and oil). The principle of acoustic impedance mismatch is described in more detail in the Ultrasonic Sensing Basics app note.

    2) It is not recommend to cover/hide the transducer. For best performance, the transducer should only be exposed to its transmission medium. It is possible to glue the transducer to a masking surface, but the amount of glue, type of glue, type of masking surface, and thickness of the masking surface become new variables which we do not have much experience with. I recommend using a masking surface such as a thin sheet of plastic to experiment with this concept.

  • Hi,

    I have another question.
    3. If customer would like to adopt this TI-Design for their system of mass production, TI is able to sell it to customer? In case of failure analysis, how TI respond for?

    Best Regards,
    Fujiwara

  • Fujiwara-san,

This TI-Design is not intended to be used as a drop-in option for an actual mass produced solution. It is primarily intended to showcase how a customer can design their own small form factor version of the PGA460 board. Regarding failure analysis, TI is only responsible for the coverage of the PGA460 IC, not the board level solution.
