WEBENCH® Tools/LM5023: Transformer construction output by Webench

Part Number: LM5023

Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

Hi

I did a design using the LM5023 controller on Webench and everything is clear to me apart from the Primary winding construction detail.

The instructions are as follow..

What I am unclear about is the following. Are the two Primary windings in Parallel, ie. starts on the same pin, eg. pin 1 and ends on the same pin, eg pin 3? I am unclear as to the meaning of the 2/4.0 number.

Your help will be appreciated as I need the transformers wound to test the prototypes.

Best regards

Chris

  • Hi

It looks like the images I pasted was left out.

    Webench instructions are:

    Winding Instruction
    Winding                                       AWG        Turns       Winding Orientation
    Primary First 2/4.0                     30.0         25             Clockwise
    Auxiliary                                       28.0         22.0          Counter Clockwise
Triple Insulated Secondary     24.0         26.0          Counter Clockwise
    Primary Second 2/4.0              30.0          24             Clockwise

    Transformer  Parameters
    Name                                     Value
    1. Lpri                                    2.91E-4H
    2. Inductance Factor(Al)    122.0nH
    3. Npri                                   49.0

  • Hi Chris,

Could you please share the design? Please use below instructions. Meanwhile I will forward the query to concerned team.

  • Hi Bhushan

Please send me your email address via mail and I will send you the PDF I exported when I did the design.

  • Hi Chris,

The primary is to be wound in 2 halves. Half of the primary turns spread over 2 layers ,the remaining half turns spread over another 2 layers, however this should be done in interleaved fashion. (The secondary winding would be sandwiched between two halves of primary)

Therefore in the report it says, Primary First 2/4 and Primary Second 2/4.

If I had the transformer report and number of bobbin pins, i could make the markings in the construction diagram.

I have similar type of older report with me which should match your configuration. It uses 10 pin bobbin, Let me know if this helps, attaching the snapshot below,

    thanks

  • Hi Sahil

Thanks for this info. It explains it for me.

I have a further question on the above. Where it states "Triple insulated secondary", is that three strands of insulated wire together (trifilar), or a thicker insulation?

    Thanks in advance

    Regards

    Chris

  • Hi Chris,

The "Triple Insulated Secondary" mentioned in the report says of the "insulation type" used in calculations for the secondary winding, over the normal bare diameter( in WEBENCH this is taken around 0.3 mm for the insulation value). It is not the 3 strands of wire wound together.

The "strands" information is separate and should be given on the first page of the transformer report,  attaching here one of the report for reference.

Let me know if anything here,

    Thanks
