Connect motor drive to PC

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: THVD1450

Hi,

I am looking for an appropriate hardware to connect my motor drive to a PC using COM Ports(Serial connection)

what is the appropriate hardware to work perfectly in industrial environment?should i use RS-485 or something else is more common?

thank u

  • Hello,

Are you designing the motor drive, or are you using something already made? If it is already made, what kind of interface port does it have? E.g., is it labelled as RS-485, RS-232, etc. or is this information (or even something like a connector pinout) published in any supporting documentation? I ask because it would be simplest to match the interface type that is already used.

To give a general answer, though, I would recommend RS-485 as a good default option for industrial communications. It supports a wide range of data rates, and the use of balanced differential signaling helps to achieve long distances and good noise immunity.

  • I am designing the motor drive and also the PC software,so i have access to all parts of the system(i use PC COM ports for the communication).therefore, i'm looking for an appropriate circuit to use as connection between these two!

thank u for your answer,do u have any other advice?

  • In that case I would recommend using an RS-485 transceiver like THVD1450.  This would allow for good noise immunity (so that motor-induced EMI does not corrupt the data) and would be robust to transient events like ESD that may be coupled to the connector ports.  RS-485 serial ports can be found on some industrial PCs, but standard consumer PCs may only have an RS-232 serial interface.  If that were the case, you could use this circuit in order to translate between the two:
