PMP20182: Increase current output

Part Number: PMP20182

Hello,

On PMP20182, which parts need to change to increase the current output from 55mA to 200mA using the same input voltage range, and same output voltage (12V)? What would be the value for those components for 200 mA output current?

We need to operate from -40C to 70C; so, from the thermal pictures, it looks like Q2, L1, R3, and R4 will require extra consideration for heat. Are there other components that will require consideration for heat? I already plan on a new layout to allow more space for heat sinks (probably extra copper around those components on the PCB), but what should the power rating be for R3 and R4?

Thanks,

Bill Allen

  • Hi Bill,

You are making the output power 4 x the original design. So I would suggest that you need to re-calculate every power stage component.

A good place to start would be to use Power Stage Designer to help get the right values.

For the circuit using R3, R4, Q1, this creates a linear regulator that is used to provide the bias power to U1. So that part of the circuit does not need to change.

The temperature requirements are quite wide, so I think Q2, L1, D5, R12 all need to be considered.

    Hopefully this helps.

    Thanks,

    Robert
