Kindly suggest right Zigbee 3.0 for Gateway Application (Home/Building Automation)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2652P, SIMPLELINK-CC13X2-26X2-SDK, CC2652RB, LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1, CC2652R, LP-CC2652RB, WL1807MOD

Hi,

We need to design the Gateway for Home/Building automation, all related requirement/feature information's are explained in the attached file, PFA FYI. You can ignore the any other modules if you feel not related to this topic, in such case, i can raise a new post for other modules.

Kindly check our requirement/application and suggest the right Zigbee 3.0 and EVM board for the same.

  • Should work with Microprocessor (Microprocessor work environment listed below, FYI)
  • Should support ZigBee 3.0 (HA 1.2)
  • Range should be maximum as possible. Kindly advise how to achieve.
  • On board PCB Antenna Sufficient or External Antenna required?

Microprocessor will be interfacing with Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, KNX tranreceiver. and Microprocessor should have the following feature:

  • Should work with Linux OS
  • Communicate with/over BLE/BLE Mesh devices, WiFi/WiFi Mesh devices, Zigbee devices.
  • Communicate with KNX devices include Sensors, actuators, supported devices
  • Communicate over Ethernet, should support BACnet IP.
  • MQTT Client libraries and AES libraries

Security:

  • Must support secure-boot with OTPROM based core root of trust
  • Build procedure to sign the bootloader OS and application binaries with a RSA private key.
  • Secure boot verification by establishing chain of trust from OTPROM till application layer.
  • OS should be Secure Linux.
  • Storing passwords, user names, keys in a secure storage

This is one of the most important Project, We need your support to built efficient product. kindly help us.

Thanks and regards,

  • Hi Naveen,

TI offers the ZIGBEE-LINUX-SENSOR-TO-CLOUD example solution for getting started with a Zigbee gateway using SIMPLELINK-CC13X2-26X2-SDK devices.  You can look at the Zigbee design & development page for compatible LaunchPads.  You will need to integrate this part into your expansive Linux solution which includes the BLE and WiFi module control.  I am looping in experts of these protocols to help give further advice respectively.

    Regards,
    Ryan

  • Hi Ryan,

    Thank you for the information.

Zigbee is communicating with end devices like sensors, Only WiFi will be connected to Cloud.

Gateway having dedicated Host Microprocessor-AM437x(Linux OS) and MPU will be interfacing with Ethernet, WiFi, Zigbee, BLE, KNX Transceiver.

    1. So kindly suggest the right Zigbee 3.0 (HA 1.2) Module/SOC, it can be interfacing with host MPU AM437x(Linux OS)?

    2. Required any firmware/Software/driver/stack/programming implementation on Zigbee module? or everything will be taken care by host MPU only right?

    3. Also confirm Zigbee drivers/stack/libraries available for AM437x?

Jan is suggested CC2652R having BLE+Zigbee in Bluetooth thread, i also need only Zigbee. Can i post in this thread or i want to post there?

    Thanks and regards,

    Naveen K

  • 1. I recommend the SIMPLELINK-CC13X2-26X2-SDK family of devices, most popular Zigbee options include the CC2652R (LAUNCHXL-CC26X2R1), CC2652RB (LP-CC2652RB), or CC2652P (LAUNCHXL-CC1352P-2).  You can review the Zigbee design and development page for more information.

    2. The device you select will need to have ZNP firmware loaded in order to control the Zigbee network.

    3. I've already stated that the ZIGBEE-LINUX-SENSOR-TO-CLOUD has Linux software that could be adjusted for your AM437x architecture.

I do not recommend trying to have a single CC2652R maintain both a BLE and Zigbee network within a gateway application.

    Regards,
    Ryan

  • Hi Ryan,

    Thank you for the information.

    1. ZNP Firmware should be loaded on Zigbee device and also application firmware should be load on Zigbee device right?

    2. Why am asking, WL1807MOD WiFi device does not need to be load any firmware/stack, Just plug and play. Only available Stack should be loaded on MPU and need to implement the software in MPU. That is why bit confusions. Any Zigbee module available like this(Stack will be load on MPU, No firmware implementation on Zigbee)?

3.You mean to say, We need to use individual Zigbee Module and Individual BLE module and individual WiFi module, like in image right or WiFi+BLE or Zigbee+BLE will be good choice?

    Thanks and regards,

    Naveen k

  • 1. Just the ZNP firmware needs to be loaded manually as it does not come loaded by default, the Zigbee application is stored on the host processor as described in the Z-Stack Linux Gateway User's Guide.

    2. There is no Zigbee module available from TI which already has the ZNP pre-programmed, you would have to research third party vendors.

    3. You will need individual modules for each protocol.

    Regards,
    Ryan

  • Hi Ryan,

    Thank you for the information.

If we need to use individual Module, CC2652R, CC2652P and CC2652RB is a Zigbee+BLE combo. Could you please suggest the individual Zigbee module?

    Thanks and regards,

    Naveen K

  • If you need to have high TX power, you can choose CC2652P for your Zigbee module. If TX power is not a concern, you can select CC2652R or CC2652RB module. CC2652RB is crystal-less BAW SOC which can be more compact in module design so you can choose it if you have size consideration in your hardware.

  • Hi Yikai,

    Thank you for the information.

What will be the range for CC2652R , CC2652RB and  CC2652RB?

Inbuilt PCB Antenna will give more range or External Antenna will give more range? Could you tell range for comparison.

    Thanks and regards,

    Naveen K

  • There’s no big difference on link budget between CC2652R and CC2652RB. If you use the same output power on CC2652R and CC2652RB, the range would be similar. In general, performance of external antenna would perform better than PCB antenna.

  • Hi Yikai,

    Thank you for the information.

Sorry, i suppose to ask CC2653P instead CC2652RB by mistake in previous reply.

Could you please tell us what will be the ranges we can achieve for CC2652R and CC2652P.

    Thanks and regards,

    Naveen K

  • You can use TI RF range estimator at https://www.ti.com/tool/RF-RANGE-ESTIMATOR to estimate the range difference.

  • Hi  Yikai,

Thank you for your information and appreciate your support.

    Thanks and regards,
