CC2642R: AOA and TOF implementation on custom hardware

Part Number: CC2642R
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SYSCONFIG

Hi All,

I am working with SDK 5.20 with custom board having CC2642R1 chip, which is designed based on Ti reference design.

My custom board has antenna switch SKYA21001 and two external antennas.

i want to check and implement AOA and TOF with my custom board which doesn't have UART port for PC communication.

Can i test AOA and TOF without UART interface on my custom hardware?

If yes what changes needs to be done in RTLS examples that is coordinator, responder and passive ?

Please share the inputs about the possibilities.

Regards,

Atul

  • Hi Atul,

TOF support has been removed of our SDK since SDK 4.10.

When it comes to AoA, the easiest option for you is to use a Bluetooth tester (such as the one provided by R&S - see here for an app note describing how to proceed).

I am suggesting this because the RTLS examples (except rtls_responder) are designed to be used with a host PC, hence may require significant modifications to be used without it.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Clement,

i went through the note you have provided,it seems like hardware testing of AOA using some third party tool,

but i want to implement AOA on the our custom hardware which is having CC2642R1 chip, one sntenna switcher and two antennas no UART.

on that for software side implementation for BLE to BLE finding AOA without UART interface can you guide for this if possible that could be helpful ..!!

Any inputs or suggestions apart from that app note ?

also in RTLS example ,co-ordinator is in central, responder is in peripheral,in which role passive operates as i saw ble section in not used in sysconfig for that.

    Please Suggest any more inputs..!!!

    Regards,

    Atul

  • Hi Atul,

In my first answer, I assumed you wanted to run the Bluetooth RF-PHY tests - apparently this is not the case.

It would be nice if you could specify what are the tests you want to run. In other words, what is the purpose of your tests?
If you want to verify if the antennas can successfully be connected to the radio, you could flash the simple_peripheral example available in our SDK on the custom board. Then you could try to establish a Bluetooth LE connection between the custom board and your smartphone (for example). If you manage to do so, you can consider the antenna can be successfully connected to the device's radio. Repeat the operation for all the antennas.

In our RTLS Toolbox, the rtls_passive devices do not run an actual BLE stack (they are running on the micro-BLE stack). The rtls_passive devices act as connection monitors. They do not have an active role in the connection. Please consult the documentation for additional details.

  • Hi Clement,

My custom board is tested and in working condition before i started checking for AOA,

So what i want to implement is finding the direction of the device from device A and to device B and vice versa without connection, and also

if possible distance between device A to device B vice versa without connection.

and i don't have UART interface to send commands using RTLS UI interface.

After finding the direction/distance from device A to device B and vice versa i want to send that data to device C which is operating in peripheral/multi-role mode.

also i want to transfer the data between device A and device B and vice versa with connection.

What are the possibilities that you can make out from this.

    Atul

  • Hi Atul,

At the moment we do not have the example you are requesting available.

You will have to modify the rtls_coordinator example to handle the use case you are describing.

I am sorry if this is not the answer you were expecting. Please don't hesitate to leverage E2E for more help in the development of this software.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Clement,

Thanks for the inputs you have shared ,i will try with rtls_coordinator example for my use case.

if in new SDK any such feature of finding AOA without PC interface or device to device AOA is planned keep me posted.

  • Hi Clement,

as rtls_examples do not on actual BLE stack and use micro-BLE stack instead, so in order to find AOA on custom HW,and transfer data between them i can add BLE part to it or same micro-BLE stack i have to study about it and use same for my development?

i mean will using BLE stack affect the rtls implemntation's micro-BLE implementation ?

    Regards,

    Atul

  • Hi Atul,

rtls_examples do not on actual BLE stack and use micro-BLE stack instead

    This is not totally correct.

    • The rtls_coordinator and rtls_responder do use the actual BLE stack. It means these examples can maintain a BLE connection.
    • The rtls_passive uses the micro-BLE stack. This means the rtls_passive cannot establish/maintain a BLE connection.

Generally speaking, it is NOT possible to have bothe the regular BLEStack and the micro BLEStack running on the same device.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Clement,

Thanks for the quick response and your inputs.
