CC2640R2F: SDKv4.10: 50 ms Bluetooth Activity?

Part Number: CC2640R2F

Hi,

My colleague is doing current consumption measurement and there is a 5mA spike very 50ms. I do not think this is the advertising interval because at firmware it is set to default 100 ms. So I assume the Bluetooth tag is connected. Could this be the connection interval? At code the minimum and maximum connection interval is set to default, but I am not sure of the exact value.

    GAPRole_SetParameter(GAPROLE_MIN_CONN_INTERVAL, sizeof(uint16_t),
                         &desiredMinInterval);
    GAPRole_SetParameter(GAPROLE_MAX_CONN_INTERVAL, sizeof(uint16_t),
                         &desiredMaxInterval);
    GAPRole_SetParameter(GAPROLE_SLAVE_LATENCY, sizeof(uint16_t),

/**
 * @brief Minimum connection interval (n * 1.25 ms) to use when performing param update (Read/Write)
 *
 * size: uint16_t
 *
 * default: 6
 *
 * range: 6 - @ref GAPROLE_MAX_CONN_INTERVAL
 */
#define GAPROLE_MIN_CONN_INTERVAL   0x311

/**
 * @brief Maximum connection interval (n * 1.25 ms) to use when performing param update (Read/Write)
 *
 * size: uint16_t
 *
 * default: 3200
 *
 * range: @ref GAPROLE_MIN_CONN_INTERVAL - 3200
 */
#define GAPROLE_MAX_CONN_INTERVAL   0x312

  • Hey Kel,

    I've assigned your post to a colleague to comment on.

  • Hi Kel,

    It seems the spikes observed in the power graph are due to the VDDS recharge pulse. More information about the recharge pulse can be found in the Measuring CC13xx and CC26xx current consumption application report. Specifically in Chapter 2 Standby. If you are able to zoom into the power spike, then you may be able to see if your spikes match what a recharge pulse looks like.

    Jan

  • Hi Jan,

    At the graph the spikes reach 5mA. From what I know that is too big for a VDDS recharge pulse. The advertising interval is set to default 100ms. Connection interval is set to default MIN 100 ms and MAX 1000ms.

  • Hi Kel,

    According to the provided document, the recharge pulse can be as much as 6mA as shown in the image below:

    Are you able to zoom in and verify if the observed power graph matches the vddr recharge shown above?

    Best Regards,

    Jan

  • Hi Jan,

    Here is another BLE activity capture a little bit zoom in. Below there are 3 very small pulse I thought that is the VDDR recharge pulse.

  • Hi Kel,

    Thank you for the additional picture. Are you observing this on a LaunchPad or a custom board? Can you try running the pinStandby project and recording the power graph as well? The graph for that project should contain the recharge pulses and will help us determine if the large spikes in your graph match up with the spikes in the pinStanby project.

    Jan

  • Hi Jan,

    My colleague is performing these test at custom board in USA. I am based in the Philippines and I do not have the testing equipment he is using.

    From how I interpret at the graph shared the 50ms interval activity is possibly the advertisement interval. However at firmware it is set to default 100ms

    Just for some comparison this is my Bluetooth Eddystone Beacon project running on CC2640R2F Launchpad. The peaks that reaches 7.319mA that happens every 200ms or so are the advertising interval. The one in red circle I assume to be the VDDR recharge pulse.

  • Hi Kel,

    It is possible those are connection events. Can your colleague take another measurement and zoom in further? If the outline of the graph matches the image shown below, then they are likely to be the connection events.:

    I would expect the distance between those spikes to change in accordance with the connection interval selected. Can your colleague try changing the interval and seeing how the spikes respond? That image is from the previously linked application report.

    Jan

  • Hi Jan,

    I was informed that this 50ms interval activity happens when the tag and IOS LightBlue App connects, so this most likely is the connection interval. For some reason it got changed to 50ms from default settings.

    Anyway, I will mark this post as answered. Thanks for your time.
