CC2642R: Factory Image

Part Number: CC2642R

Hi,

I work on a project which create a factory image of the current running image each time a OAD is performed.

From my understanding of the OAD process, this step does not provide further robustness for my project and can be removed to save space in the external flash.

Reasons why:

  • No HMI like a button is available to trigger the revert mechanism in the BIM
  • The factory image is always based on the current running image and not a special one loaded from production.
  • In case a downloaded image in external flash fails (e.g. crc check), the image in internal flash will be intact and reused.
  • In case the process fails of overwriting the internal flash with a validated downloaded image from external flash, the process will continue/start over next time the BIM is running.

Do i miss anything or is it true that for my project I can skip this step?

Best regards,

Christoffer

  • Hi Christoffer,

The factory image should only be created on command, like with the two-button menu display (OAD_DEBUG must be defined) or if the external flash memory does not already have a factory image stored.  It should not occur during each OAD operation nor should it need to so long as there is a factory image installed on the external flash device.

Factory images are not required for OAD operations.  That are not supported in on-chip OAD projects due to size restrictions.  Thus you are correct that ignoring the factory image on the external flash is possible.  As the name suggests, they are beneficial for returning the device image back to a "factory" setting.  You can also review the BLE Enhanced OAD SimpleLink Academy Labs and BLE5-Stack User's Guide section concerning OAD.
