CC2640R2F: BLE Long range mode communication- Coded PHY

Hi,

We are developing a peripheral and central software which we want to communicate only with the Coded PHY mode to get the best range. The central device should be able to discover/connect to a BLE peripheral over the coded PHY.

one device (the Peripheral) will need to advertise on the Coded PHY while the other (the Central) will need to be configured to look for advertisements on the Coded PHY, Here is my question to you.

1. Can this peripheral and central communicate only with the Code PHY mode? If yes. Please share some info. to start the development activity.

Hi Rahul,

Yes if both, devices can support coded phy (which our device can) then you will be able to communicate with that phy mode.

I believe the PHY simple link academy example will be a great start to your development.

We have implemented, and tested the range, and here is the result for you to explain in detail whether this is an expected behavior / This is how BLE works during the connection & re-connection.

Result

Connected distance from peripheral: 24 meter

Disconnected distance from peripheral: 65 meter

Hi Rahul,

Its hard to say what range you are supposed to be getting as a lot is dependent on the environment. However, I can suggest you test using the LE 1M PHY and see what range you get there, then test again with coded PHY. Your range should be around 2 times better, emphasis on around.

Thanks for the suggestion. I doubt we may not configure correctly (or) didn't force to enable the peripheral module & Central module to coded phy?

The version of SDK, simplelink_cc2640r2_sdk_4_40_00_10

let us know the configuration that we need to re-check in our code for peripheral advertising on Coded Phy, Scannable on Coded Phy & Connectable on coded phy to get the 2 times range .

A good way to check if you device is actually using coded phy would be to use btool.

In task 2 there is a section that goes over how to use btool, with it youll be able to scan device and see the devices properties such as the PHY.

In this picture you can see the device scanned is using 1M PHY. Can you try finding out what you device is using?
