CC2540 or other bluetooth chips

Hi,

I'm looking for a bluetooth system on chip which is compatible with my cell phone (bluetooth 2.1).  I was told about the CC2540, which is Bluetooth low energy compliant.  Is it backwards compatible with bluetooth 2.0, 2.1, or 3.0?

If not, could you recomment any other bluetooth system on chips which are compatible? Preferably texas instruments, but i could look outside too if necessary.

    BLE(part of the Bluetooth 4.0 specification) is not compatible with standard Bluetooth. The CC256x is a standard bluetooth device that  can be easily connected to a cell phone. For example, if you were to obtain an Experimenter board + PAN1315, you could pair to a cell phone and exchange information (provided that the cell phone supports the SPP profile (which most phones such as Android phones do).

    I have a similar question, regarding sniffing Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR data.

    I had a quick look at the Experimenter board you've suggested(http://www.em.avnet.com/en-us/design/drc/Pages/Texas-Instruments-PAN1315-Bluetooth-Evaluation-Module-Kit-for-MSP430.aspx) and it looks like it spports Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR indeed. It looks like a prototyping/development board and I was just wondering, do you know if the board is also capable of sniffing/capturing overall Bluetooth traffic/packets ?

    The CC256x doesn't have the Packet Sniffer capabilities as the CC2540
