CC2642R: EEPROM Protection

One customer is using CC2642R device. They had one question about EEPROM protection. They have already gone through Memory Protection Unit (MPU) section in CC26x2 TRM. But had one query -

"Do we need to use MPU or CCFG for EEPROM ( Emulated ) protection. Our customer wants to know how we will ensure that the contents of EEPROM will not be erased accidently or due to some spurious noise ?"

Hello Sai,

I'm not sure what is meant by EEPROM (Emulated) in this context. I'm assuming we're just referring to the device flash memory, is that the case?

If so, then the difference between MPU and CCFG is that CCFG only offers write and erase protection and only at a granularity of 8KB. MPU can read and write protect as well as protect at both Privileged and unprivileged levels of access. See https://developer.arm.com/documentation/ddi0403/latest/ for more information.

I think in the case where you just want to protect flash from accidental erase then CCFG configuration would be sufficient. But without knowing the whole use case and system requirements I couldn't say for sure.

Jake, just had one follow up question.

"Can we change the CCFG or MPU at run time ( SW control ) since we are using the emulated EEPROM, we may need to change it dynamically during run time like unlock the protection, right in the memory and again lock it."

Hi Sai,

The CCFG setting is used at boot time. For runtime they'll want to use the MPU.
