Replace original battery pack of EZ430-RF2560 with a smaller one

Hi,

as subject I need to replace the original battery pack of EZ430-RF2560 developer kit  with a smaller one.

I thinked at this coin battery, but dunno if can work :

I looked to the documentation but can't find information about mAh.

Thanks

  • Netmastro,

I am not sure what exactly you're asking. However, in general the discharge curve of a battery is highley dependant on the rate of discharge. As you might imagine, the lower the discharge rate, the longer the effective the battery capacity. Estimating the rate of discharge is in itself dependant on the application. If you will put the device to sleep for long periods, the rate of discharge will be less. Conversely, If communications are maintained for long periods, the battery itself will show a lower effective charge. You can look at the datasheet for two examples.

Please be careful about using the batteries you've selected. They are designed for the low current draw of battery backup, not for the higher draw of a digital system. Given that its standard discharge is 0.4mA, any connection to a wireless transceiver such as the CC256x will likely result in very short battery lifetime (consider that you might discharge many times that rate), even to the point of permanent damage to the battery. The physical chemistry may not be able to sustain the short peak bursts of current required.

A good rechargeable battery for your application is usually a Lithium Ion or Polymer, which can easily handle the current requirements and usually has good capacity.

  • Hi Gustavo,

can you suggest me a small lithium ion battery pack for this developer kit ?

    Thanks

  • Netmastro,

    Here are some ideas:

Note that TI does not support or promote these products/manufacturers/distributors. There is no native lithium ion battery pack for the EZ430 platform as far as I know. However, I have personally used some of those batteries and they seem to work nicely. You will need to create a charger, for which you can use some commercial system or develop one using TI's battery charger devices.

  • In your opinion how many mAh I need ?

Can't find anything can help me in the documentation.

    Thanks

  • Netmastro,

It really depends on your application. Cell phones usually have about 850mAH batteries, with smartphones 1250mAH or more.
