LP-CC2652RB: Attaching an External Antenna

Hi,

Is it possible to attach an external antenna to get better RF performance? I.e. use this adapter along with a typical SMA antenna? Or must the LP-CC2652RB be used with the PCB antenna?

I see that the small JSC connector on the launchpad is made by Murata and seems to be for probing, and not for an antenna.

Hi Michael,

Yes you can attach an external antenna to the LaunchPad. We typically use that connection for measuring conducted performance but there's no reason an antenna can't be connected.

Make sure to move the capacitor on the RF path:

I see. Should I de-solder C14 and put it in the position of C24?

Michael,

Yes, that's typically what we do when working with these boards. I recommend having some spares on hand though since they're quite small and easy to lose or damage.

Got it, thank you! Is there any chance you have a radiation pattern and/or gain value for the on-board PCB antenna?

Hi Michael,

I don't for that specific design but https://www.ti.com/lit/an/swru120d/swru120d.pdf shows the same antenna on a different reference design but the performance should be similar.
