CC2651R3SIPA: Power consumption during startup

Part Number: CC2651R3SIPA

Hi team,

Do we have any data on expected power consumption during startup? Our customer is seeing a current surge during system turn on and we are trying to determine what impact the CC2651 has on this.

Thanks,
Ben

  • Hi Ben,
I have assigned this to the relevant expert. Meanwhile can you follow up on what is the current amount they are seeing, and if they have tested by only isolating the cc2651 chip from the system?

    Kind Regards,

    Rogelio

  • Hi Ben,

I am waiting on data from our validation/SW team.

In the meantime, how much current are they measuring on start-up?

On a side, a common cause of higher than usual current surge are large capacitors. Do they have any capacitors with values larger than what is recommended on the reference design?

    Best regards,

    Bun

  • Hi Ben,

Thanks for looking into this. Please let me know what you hear back from the team.

I will follow up over email with test data.

    Thanks,
    Ben

  • Hi Bun,

Current during startup is 550 - 600mA. Do we have any idea if this is possible for this device during startup?

    Thanks,

    Ben

  • Hi Ben,

550 - 600 mA is definitely too large for the device to draw. I will request samples and confirm this value while I wait for data from our validation team.

I will provide a response by 6/20 at the latest as it takes 3-5 business days to ship out samples.

I believe the fastest solution is for the customer to isolate the CC2651 and power it directly without the peripherals and measure the startup current. This would narrow the potential root causes.

    Best regards,

    Bun

  • Hi Ben,

I was able to capture startup current of the CC2651R3SIPA using the N6705B DC Power Analyzer and max current is around 136mA. We can rule out the device as a root cause. One troubleshooting technique the customer can use to find the cause is remove one active device at time until they observe a significant current draw on startup.

    Best regards,

    Bun
