Hi TI Team,

We are planning to use Chip (SMD) antenna instead of PCB antenna as antenna array , Kindly suggest guidelines accordingly.

    I'm assuming this is for the AoA testing. It is possible to use a chip antenna as an array, but we don't recommend it as the PCB antenna are optimized and calibrated for this test.

    However, if your team prefer chip antennas below are considerations to be aware of:

    1. Please ensure operating frequency is 2402 - 2480 GHz.

    2. Ensure they are directional antenna and not omnidirectional.

    3. We did not validate the process with a chip antenna so we cannot provide support if this route is taken.

    4. An optimization process will need to happen to use a chip antenna such as tuning matching networks.

    5. The antenna pattern will need to be characterized.

    6. Re-calibration will need to take place with the new antenna.

    Kindly clear that term

    1. Ensure they are directional antenna and not omnidirectional. Is radiation pattern should be directional only

    2. As per my knowledge, you guys did validation with dipole PCB antenna and they are also omni-directional.

    3. What impact will be there if we use omni-directional antenna instead of directional antenna.

    4. Could you please suggest any reference document where ceramic (chip) antenna was used (BLE application)

    2. The TX antenna is omnidirectional and RX is directional

    3. Worse overall performance. For example, worse array factor that translate into higher degree of error when calculating the AoA.

    4. I am not aware of any that uses chip antenna specifically.

  • 1. In that case, could you please suggest some antenna array manufacturer's or link to validate AOA feature.

    2. If we use directional antenna at rx side then it is prorogated its radiation in a specific direction only, if user is in other direction then it may create problem while communication.

    Additionally, I will need to reach out to my team and see if they are aware of any resources regarding chip antenna validation.but it is process follows these steps:

    1. Measuring antenna radiation pattern and using this data to calculate the AoA based off the phase and gain of the received signal

    a. Note that if a chip antenna is not directional the radiation pattern will be uniform (spherical) thus the gain will be uniform no matter the angle of arrival, which makes it difficult to use gain to calculate the angle. Whereas a directional antenna has a more beam-like pattern and non-uniform thus allowing gain to be used to calculate angle, which allows for a more accurate measurement.

    2. Calibrating antenna factor = [free-space path loss] + [antenna gain]

    a. We typically use 3 meter as the distance between TX and RX antenna.

    First of all, we don't have enough space to place dipole antenna in our board so we have to go with chip antenna for AOA.

    1. ok, we will take chip antenna with operating freq (2402-2480 Mhz)

    2. As per my knowledge, it is depend on antenna placement (horizontally or vertically) for directional or omni. If dedicated directional antennas comes in chip antenna then please let me know.

    3. If you guy's didn't validate chip antenna then to whom should I take help ? . We have to design with chip or else we have to drop TI SOC from our design. Let me know how should I proceed.

    4. Tuning can be take care by chip antenna manufacturer.

    5. We will test and check antenna pattern

    6. We will do it

    7. If I replace chip antenna with pcb antenna then what guidelines I have to be follow. Loop in or take help from your team to guide us for placing chip antenna in that design.

    2. Directional antennas do come in chip form.

    3. I would suggest switching to a CC26XX device for AoA as the software feature has not have implemented yet for CC2340 and writing the localization engine from scratch is a complex and lengthy process.

    7. I have looped in our fields and auto team. They are actively discussing the next best step regarding this topic.

  • CC26XX series is not auto grade so we can't go with that. But we have CC2642 & 52 with us for AOA validation purpose.

    Assume that we have a Mobile and having a key FOB(Tx) and they both are paired with the help of application. We have a receiver (Rx) in the vehicle and we need to check vehicle location (only a single PCB/CHIP antenna place at Rx side, np antenna array) by mobile.

    So can we perform trilateration (angle calculation) as we have total 3 BLE devices and create mesh network.

    Is it work ??

  • Hi Munesh,

    I apologize for the delay as I was on PTO, but trilateration or triangulation you would need a third TX device to further narrow down the location of the car. Realistically, a person would carry their phone and key FOB with them so the distance between these TX devices would effectively be seen as one TX device. This means you would need 2 additional TX devices.
