I am wanting to implement a RFID system into a current project. I want to place RFID readers in seats of a vehicle and the tags on people. The Readers need a read range of 2-3' but not much further, so that if a tag is picked up on the reader it can be identified and assigned to that seat location. The readers also need to be as small as possible as space is limited. The reader system will communicate with a microcontroller so I need a serial data output.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I used to work with the ACG HF Multi ISO. Now I think ACG has been bought by HIDGlobal. This reader can work both with ISO 14443 and ISO 15693.

ISO 15693 tags are able to communicate through longer distances than 14443 but this is not the case of this reader since it is small to include an antenna where the differences are noticeable.

If the price is something important for you, a single protocol reader instead of a multi one is going to be a better choice.

Hi Chad,

If considering the small read range of 2-3' I would recommend you using a system that operates within the Near-Field, that is with inductive coupling (instead of an Far-Field which uses backscattered coupling). For this the usual options are LF ~125kHz or HF 13.56MHz but you will also find systems running 2.45GHz as well.

The tags are available on a lot of places around the internet so dont worry about that for start with. Choose a frequency, then a reader and last the tag(s).
