We had a requirement where the TI bt chip CC2640 needed to be controlled from the host CPU and the TI bt chip CC2640 needed to act both as a peripheral and central, based on the need. While trying out, we figured out that running "Host Test sample application" on CC2640 and develop an application code which will use HCI commands like "btool" is the best way to go about it. While we know that "btool" is not an open source tool. So we were wondering if there place where the HCI/GAP/GAAT source code is available so that we can leverage the same to write our application which will control the CC2640 from host CPU just like btool.

Thank you for reaching out. I have a few resources that I believe will be very helpful during your development based on the description you have provided. There are different resources avaiable depending on whether you are using the BLE4 or BLE5 stack, so I have listed them both below:

BLE5-Stack

1. HCI Vendor Specific Guide - Lists all the vendor specific HCI commands along with their parameters

2. HCI Chapter - Provides in-depth description of how the HCI interface works

3. Network Processor Interface (NPI) - Provides description for how the Network Processor Interface works.

BLE4 Stack

1. HCI Vendor Specific Guide - Lists all the vendor specific HCI commands along with their parameters

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the pointers.

Looking at the docs I believe that for host test firmware we need to use Legacy NPI. We wanted to use the npi server in https://e2e.ti.com/support/wireless-connectivity/bluetooth-group/bluetooth/f/bluetooth-forum/1300153/cc2640-bt i.e example/npi_server2 where in it will open a network socket for us to write and it will take care of sending the npi packet. Wanted to know if the above sends in unified NPI format or legacy NPI format.

Hi Sumanth,

The provided SDK supports 15.4, but not Bluetooth LE, so it will likely not be able to be used in this case without large modifications.

Hi Jim.

Earlier we had the used the same ( example/npi_server2 in "TI-15-4-STACK-GATEWAY-LINUX-SDK") for communication between the SAP on host side and simple AP on the firmware side. Now we plan to move to "host test" on the firmware side and our app using the HCI commands. So we were wondering if we can use the same NPI layer.

Hi,

Understood. The host_test project does use the NPI transport method, but I am not sure if its directly compatible with the NPI implementation used in the TI 15.4 Stack Gateway. It is very likely commands will be different.
