CC2640: AN043 - Mistake in Table

I have a customer with the below inquiry. Let me know what you think and thanks in advance!

"I was reviewing Ti Application notes AN043. Looking at the conclusion table 6, I believe there is a mistake in the units utilized for reporting the antenna gain.

If you look at the antenna gain graph reported on pages 8 to 15,  I believe the units for the gain in  table 6 should have been dBi and not dB.

For example, for the XY plane reported measurements on page 9, the radiation circle shows the maximum gain with 4.5dBm reference level. The circle showing the data is in dBi, so the maximum gain observed should have been 4.5dBi and not dB. I am not too sure how one can report antenna gain in dB as from my understanding, antenna gain should be reported relative to isotopic dBi. If I am not correct, please let me know.

    A few points:

    • I agree, this should be in dBi for clarity. I cannot find the original data for this measurement but I have no reason to believe it wouldn't be calculated relative to an isotropic antenna.
    • However, as part of its inclusion in the CC-Antenna-DK, this antenna design was measured and more comprehensive results given (including the Gain at the bottom, middle, and top of the band) in Table 30 (Board 15) of SWRA328 (DN031 - CC-Antenna-DK Documentation and Antenna Measurements Summary): https://www.ti.com/lit/swra328 - the customer can also view the full CTIA report from that document if they require. I would use that document as the main source of information about the antenna design.
    • More details are also found in Section 7.2.1 of SWRA161 (AN058 – Antenna Selection Guide): https://www.ti.com/lit/swra161
    • As noted in SWRA161, it is recommended to use the Inverted F-Antenna detailed in Section 7.2.1.2 (Board 7 of the CC-Antenna-DK) instead if there is enough space on the PCB.
