CC2652RB: Will CC2652RB be affected by the chip temperature when it is mounted?

HI TI experts?
We have used CC2652RB chip to manufacture more than 200 CC2652RB modules,
but among the more than 200, five of them have too high frequency bias, about 25khz, while our standard is 20khz. Since it does not have a crystal oscillator, we cannot adjust the frequency deviation. Our SMT chip temperature is 245 degrees.
But after we used a hot air gun to replace CC2652RB, we found that the frequency deviation would become higher. We used 370 degrees for the hot air gun to rework.
Will CC2652RB be affected by the soldering temperature?

  • Hi Weli,

I am assuming you are working in Celsius.

Temperature can definitely affect crystal performance especially integrated crystals. Check out our QFN solder reflow profile: Page 14, Figure 5-2 https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slua271c/slua271c.pdf

It states that the PCB should not be subject to more than 260C for more than 90 seconds and no more than 4C per second ramp.

In my experience, when you are doing manual reworks I would pre-heat the PCB to 30C to reduce the chance of thermal shocks, which can affect crystal performance.

    Best regards,

    Bun
