CC2340R5: What could be minimum heap size?

Hi Forum,

I see default heap size of 0x00004D50 (~19kB) for "basic_ble_OAD_onchip" example code. i want to use this example code as my "base code" to project which will be having max 5 connections. My concern is RAM consumption, since much of the space is taken by heap. to what minimum limit i can reduce it to?

Hi !

The default heap value was chosen to support the operations of the basic BLE example, and to have a healthy margin for additional features a user might add on top of basic BLE.

This said, I would recommend you to use the Runtime Object Viewer to evaluate the heap size needed. You can follow this chapter of the user guide to chose a value for your heap. The idea behind this guide is to use use your application at the most charge it should support, with a generous heap, and then see the maximum memory used. You take this value, add a margin of security, and this becomes your heap size.

Since you don't know the necessary heap size during development, I would advise you to keep the initial heap size, or at least keep a generous heap size, so that you don't encounter heap bugs during the initial development.

Thanks Maxence, I would like to ask one thing, is there anyway to profile heap usage over entire runtime? I want to know "heap_usage vs time" over the runtime, so that i can plot and observe the maxima.

Hi,

I would use the FreeRTOS functions for this, as the heap is managed by FreeRTOS. the FreeRTOS xPortGetFreeHeapSize function returns the amount of free heap size. You could call this function in your firmware periodically and send it to UART to graph it using your own software.

May i know which heap implementation TI is using? i see 5 heap implementation in FreeRTOS, each suitable for different scenario.

What would you need this information for ? I don't think you need to know this as long as you can use xPortGetFreeHeapSize.
