Dual roles: Master and Slave

We have a product that would need to be a master (initiator) in one role and automatically switch to slave (advertiser) in another role. The role change would be initiated by external stimulus input. Is this possible to do using the CC2540 chip?

I have a slave device (connected to a phone master) that I want to be aware of other slave devices around them. I was hoping that I could have this device do a discovery however I see that this is a feature of the master role.

So is the ONLY way do do this by switching between roles? This would mean that the connection to the phone master would be lost every time the role is changed from slave to master.

I really hope there is an alternate solution?
