CC2340R5: basic_ble baseline current consumption

Part Number: CC2340R5
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ENERGYTRACE

Hi all,

This is what I get when running EnergyTrace on vanilla SDK example "basic ble" on a Launchpad CC2340R5 connected to a XDS110-ET.

I run it via "Free Run", so I was expecting lower power consumption than 1 mA.

Please let me know what do I have to remove / tweak to get the power consumption in the range of the typical advertising Peripheral, that is, tens of µA.

  • Hi Kazola,

From your screen capture, it seems you are measuring current in a debugging session with the JTAG debug probe connected to the target. In this case, two things will happen:

    - The Debug Subsystem of your CC2340R5 device is powered up and running. This typically draws a few mA.

    - The Debug Subsystem prevents the device from going to sleep/standby modes.

The only alternative to properly measure the sleep/standby is to use EnergyTrace outside of a debug session (something that is not possible with CCSv20+ versions, unfortunately) or using the command-line interface stune. There is also a Github project for a frontend for stune, but the data still needs to be captured using CCS 12.8.1 or older.

For help with using stune, check section 3.3.5 of the document below:

    Hope this helps,
