8051 Compiler to support CC2540

Hi, I'm looking to use CC2540, however, EW8051 was recommended by TI and all the code examples are built on EW8051. However, is there any free compilers out there to support CC2540 or any other Chipcon radio SoCs? I'm thinking of using SDCC. One of the customer feedback is that, the stack or library has not been ported over to SDCC. Is that true? Is BLE stack from TI in source code or binary? Can I take the TI stack and compile it in SDCC?

EW8051 is the only environment you can work with in order to develop for CC2540/1 at the moment because Bluetooth stack is provided as object code which was built with EW8051. No other compiler/linker I am aware of can be used right now.

Hi,

You may possibly find CC2540 module solutions from TI partners useful (like BlueGiga's BLE112). They will probably use proprietary stacks, but programming tools should be either cheap or free. If you are not exactly fighting to conserve space and have external host to control CC2540, using TI's HCI w/Bluegiga's API is a nice option.

As indicated by the above responses, the Chipcon 8051 devices are only supported by IAR and we do not have any support in CCS for these parts. There is an evaluation version of the tools available from IAR for free, but I believe this is limited to 30 days (looks like they've recently changed the way they handle evaluation versions again.) You would need to check with IAR to see what options are available. Go to www.iar.com for more info.

Do not check, you can't do without IAR.

Even you can't program inside a Virtual Machine.

Yea this process is kind of a mess...IAR can charge whatever they to use their tool since it's required.

Since I don't have enough budget for my project now, I can't afford IAR. When you use virtual machine the compiler gives you error by saying that you are using Virtual Machine. Hence, what I am doing temporarily is using a lowest enough PC that can work with IAR and formatting it when it expires. This way works.

Get "HardDiskSerialNumberChanger" from xboxharddrive, change UUID of your primary partition and re-install IAR.

Hello all,

I am going to work on CC2530EMK and CC debugger and I am fresh on this topic.

I was wondering if is still IAR workbench for 8051 the only software that provided the stack for this hardware, or if are others tool that I can use.

Hello Filippo,

Welcome to the Forum!

Yes, the IAR is the only IDE available if you want to use the stack. If you want to program it as a regular 8051 then you can use any other IDE and the SmartRF Flash Programmer. If you switch to the CC2538 ARM version then you can use Code Composer Studio to program the device.
