Hello:

I have the CC2541DK-SENSOR kit and am looking to try to write some of my own code usign this kit and download and debug the on-chip 8051 MCU. What compiler(s) are supported and recommended for this kit?

Thanks so much for the info on the toolchain and development!

For the CC2541, I am trying to read the devices using the device monitor application that I downloaded (using the CC2540EMK-USB dongle). It sounds like I need to re-program this target with a different .hex file?

Can this be done over the USB or do a need a programmer?

If you point me toward some documentation or something that says that I need to use the CC-debugger (which I don’t have, yet?), that would be very helpful!

Will the CC debugger work on reprogramming the CC2541 development kits as well? Does this sound like the correct approach?

You need to program the 2540USB dongle with the \Accessories\HexFiles\CC2540_USBdongle_HostTestRelease_All.hex image, the same that is used with BTool.

You need a CC debugger to do this. Alternatively you can use a SmartRF05 board programmed with CC2540_SmartRF_HostTestRelease_All.hex or 2541 of course. This will make the CC2540/41 on the EM do the same as the USB dongle, and can be used in Device Monitor or BTool via a com-port.

The SmartRF board includes a programmer available via USB that can program EM boards sitting on the SmartRF05 board. For other targets you'd need a CC debugger. Documentation on programming is provided in the kit User Guide and Quick Start guide.
