Bluetooth Low Energy direction finding design

Hi all,

I am looking for resources to access the feasibility of building a BT Low Energy "beacon finder".

What I need is to add a "direction finding" capability to a "classic" CC254x reference design, in order to find the direction (2D or best,  3D) of an emitting device within reasonable angular accuracy.

I am thinking of an "angle-of-arrival" calculation device using an antenna array (but this might require hacking into low level drivers of the chip) or using a RSSI measurements method using multiple "directional" antennas pointing in different directions (but multipath could be an issue).

Any idea, design, link or contact are appreciated.

Thanks for reading.
