import export regulation for bluetooth low energy

Hello,

we started developing a family of new products with wireless connectivity and after analyzing different technologies, we chose bluetooth low energy as the right one for our purposes, from a technical point of view, and for its world-wide availability.

Especially with regards to the second mentioned aspect, i.e. world-wide availability, ordering development kits and design guildelines, we saw that import/export control regulations seem to be involved, because of encryption, in particular for the USA, but not only.

Now, the question is: in developing sensors or remote controls using bluetooth low energy, maybe enabling security features too, are there any special aspects / requests / approvals that need to be taken into account for import/export? Are there guidelines about this anywhere?

Thank you,

best regards,

Antonio

  • Hello Antonio,

There seems to be a particular import/export rule that allows for the import/export of kits and finished end devices, but not for the individual components.  So while you may be able to import all the kits from a distributor, the same chip that is in the kit cannot be ordered individually.

Your best bet would be call or contact the sales department directly  if you don't get a reply in the forum.  I believe this is a manufactures restriction and not that of the distributor.

    Thanks,

  • Hello Greenja,

    thank you for your answer.

In particular for the first part: my question was in fact related to the import/export/re-export regulations of a possible final product of us.

My doubt was not related to difficulties in getting the modules or the chips, but to possible attentions to be paid when we will in case finallay sell the products.

Any further references to this pls?

    Thank you,

    Antonio

  • Hello Antonio,

The exporting of your final product is outside may area of expertise.

I do know that when you export something, you have to assign it an ECCN.  Since your product involves RF, there will be certain requirements and certifications that would need to be filed before you can export them to the USA.  These rules and regulations would fall under the FCC.  Every country has there own particular certifications, i.e. Japan, that you must provide.

You could search the internet for how to export your Bluetooth device or visit the www.bluetooth.org.  Perhaps when you become a member of the special interest group (SIG), they will provide you with the guidelines you need for certification and export.

    Thanks,

  • Hello Greenja,

thank you for your further feedback.

For what concern EMC, i.e. CE/FCC/.. or other regulation regarding electromagnetic compatibility I know there are also third parties test laboratory that can help.

With regards to import/export regulations, instead, it seems to be a more complicated or not so clear field.. I'll have a look at ECCN and hope the BT SIG can help too.

    Thank you,

    Antonio
