Wireless USB Bridge

Hi,

I'm looking for a product that will provide and easy way to create a wireless USB bridge. We currently make a USB device and I would like to modify it to be wireless, ideally without having to make any firmware changes so as far as the device is concerned it just has a USB connection.

Does that sound reasonable? Can anyone recommend a product or an area I should be looking in?

Hi Ed,

You can use the Human Interface Device Profile (HID) that is commonly used for mouses, keyboards, etc. What is the throughput of the USB data?

Hi Zahid,

Thanks for your response. I will use HID and mass storage but what I want is to bridge an existing USB connection wirelessly. I had a look at the CC256x but can't see how this meets my requirements. Can you explain?

Hi Ed,

For HID, there is a Bluetooth profile for HID so you should be able to send data over the air to a Bluetooth enabled device that also has HID profile such as in a laptop.

For sending serial data, you can use SPP (Serial Port Profile) to send data to for example a laptop or smartphone.

For mass storage, you can also use SPP to send the data but would have to be parsed in the other side and saved as mass storage in the application level.

Hi Zahid,

I'm not sure what you're describing is really what I'm asking about. I'm looking for a wireless bridge for a USB device that is independent of the data sent and requires no development. I've done a diagram to show what I mean (below). Surely this must be a super common thing to want to do?

I am facing the very same problem. Did you find any solution? I am looking at bluetooth but most probably is not going to work.

Look at Cables Unlimited USB-WR2000. I use this to do exactly what you describe. Unfortunately they went bankrupt in 2011 thus the device is getting hard to find, and also expensive.
