BLE cc2540 USB Dongle unable to connect / Btool won't find any port to connect

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2540

Hello,

I am having the similar issue and couldn't get BTtool working on my Windows 7 64-bit.

I have flashed the dongle withCC2540_USBdongle_HostTestRelease_All.hex. Upon plugging the dongle into the USB port, the LED is showing red. And nothing is shown in the device manager.

I also tried to use CC2540_SmartRF_HostTestRelease_All.hex. I flashed this file to the CC2540 EM module on the SmartRF05 evaluation board. It's shown up under "Cebal controlled devices".

Updating the driver is no success with C:\Texas Instruments\BLE-CC254x-1.3\Accessories\Drivers\usb_cdc_driver_cc2540.inf:

1. If I right click on usb_cdc_driver_cc2540.inf and choose "Install", a "Install Error" dialog would pop up and says "The INF file you selected does not support this method of installation"

2. If I right click on SmartRF05EB in the Device Manager, then "Update Driver Software..." --> "Browse my computer for driver software" --> "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" --> "Have Disk..." --> (Useusb_cdc_driver_cc2540.inf), another error dialog will say the driver is not compatible:

Any ideas as to this USB dongle problem?

Thanks,

Jackie

  • Hi Jiaqi,

Have you installed SmartRF Studio 7? If not, please try that since it includes the Windows USB CDC driver (which is not included in Windows by default)

You should not need to select the driver manually but rather let Windows choose the driver itself when the "new hardware found" wizard shows up.

Please let me know if there are more issues with this,

    Regards,
    Svend

  • I too cannot get the B-Tool to establish a connection with SmartRF05 even after downloading the SmartRF Studio 7.  I'm using Vista and a USB to serial converter to connect to the SmartRF05

Do you have some further suggestions to try?

    Thanks,

    Pat Dolan

  • Hi Pat,

I just tried a setup similar to yours and this is what I needed to do to make it work:

    - Using STLab USB2.0 to 4-serial port, I first installed the drivers for this device and verified the 4 new COM ports showed up in Device Manager

    - In Device Manager, configured one of the new serial ports with 115200bps, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit and Hardware flow control (RTS/CTS)

    - Flash a CC2540 sitting on the SmartRF05EB with CC2540_SmartRF_HostTestRelease_All.hex

    - Enable RS232 on SmartRF05EB with the "RS232 Enable" switch on the board

    - Open BTOOL, select my COM port (2 in my case) and configure it with the same settings.

I also tried the same but connected directly to the COM port on my docking station. This failed to connect so it seems like there are some HW compatibility issues with some devices.

  • Hi Svend

I already have RF studio 7 installed but Btool still wouldn't recognize the port.

    Any suggestions?

  • Svend,

Thanks.  Setting the bps to 112500 took car of the problem.  I am connected.  Thanks for checking.
