Hello,

We are working on a small device which uses BLE. Our intention is to take it to a crowdfunding platform like Kickstarter and manufacture 1K-2K units.

Currently we are using PAN1721 module which uses cc2541 and TI's BLE-stack. We are using one of the existing profiles (simpleBLEPeripheral) to implement required characteristics.

My questions are:

If we replace PAN1721 by cc2541 chip following the reference design from cc2541 Evaluation Module,

-- Would we need to get Bluetooth SIG certification if we don't use PAN1721?

-- What about FCC, CE? We hope to have international backers for our project.

Aditya,

If you use the CC2541EM reference design and TI BLE stack with the certified profiles, you can get away with not having to certify your product. For more info you should read our wiki page on the same (http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/How_to_Certify_your_Bluetooth_product)

You will have to do FCC and CE certification for your product.

Thanks Chatto for the quick response.

I understand that we'll need to go for the FCC, CE certification anyway even if we use PAN1721, so I guess the best would be to use CC2541 EM reference design. We are only connecting few sensors to the I2C bus of CC2541; that is not changing the reference design.

Currently we are using existing available simpleBLEprofile for data transfer. Now if we want to extend this profile to have more characteristic values, would that constitute as changing the certified profile?

Aditya,

That is a very good question. The Bluetooth SIG has not clearly defined the breadth of how much can be included or removed before a new certification is required. You could be okay. However, I would clear it with the Bluetooth SIG.
