BLE Range

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2541, CC2540, CC2590

Hi,

I am working on a device (which will be operated indoors) which consists of 2 parts: (a) Handheld unit and (b) Stationary gateway. I was thinking of using BLE and so work with CC2541. But I am a bit concerned about BLE's short range (only about 10-60 meters). One of the reasons I chose BLE was its low power consumption characteristic. But at the same time I cannot afford to lose contact with the gateway (I can sacrifice low power consumption requirement for connection). I just wanted to see if BLE's signal can be strong enough that I can use it to communicate with a gateway which may be 50-75 meters away or is it that the signal is good enough only to communicate with devices which are in close proximity (say 5-10 meters away). So basically I just want to confirm whether BLE can be used reliably indoors to communicate (at least 50-75 meters) without any range extender.

Thank you.

  • Hi,

If somebody can help me answer the question (can BLE be used reliably indoors to communicate (at least 50-75 meters) without any range extenders or should I stick with classic Bluetooth as my air interface.) , it will be very helpful. Please let me know.

    Thank you!

  • Hi Datta,

CC2541 provides up to 0 dBm output power. I would not recommend it for an application that requires reliable indoor range of 75 meters without a range extender. I would be surprised if a classic bluetooth device would perform better with the same power levels, though.

  • Hi Peder,

Thanks for getting back to me. I absolutely understand that I may have to use a range extender (referring to older posts ... CC2540 & CC2590)) and I am fine with it. So, I guess with a range extender I should be able to achieve at least 60 meters (if not 75 meters) ... if yes, then it serves my purpose.

    Thank you.

  • Hi

Use cc2540 , cc2540 has 4dBm output, we can get 120 -139m for open sight distance under advertising mode. For connection mode, we can get 80 -90 m.

For indoor distance, our experience is around 40 -45m.

We just use chip antenna, we might improve it by using di-pole antenna which you can find on TI application note.

Hope this information is helpfule to you

Hi. A few questions if I may? We are struggling to get more than 10m range in-home.

Is your indoor 40-45m line of sight? What type of building?

Forgive a newbie BLE question, but why do you get better range for advertising mode than connection mode?

    Thx
