Design guidance for BTLE system that is simultaneous master and slave

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2541

Hi, I'm trying to design a system that would require both an active BTLE in slave mode to maintain an open connection with an iOS device, while simultaneously having an open connection in master mode with other BTLE slaves.  This is for a sports application, and I think what others are doing is using BTLE to connect to the iOS device, and ANT for simultaneous communication with slaves.  But, I'd like to design the system to only use BTLE.  Is this possible?

Having designed a system using the CC2541, it seems like I could use two of these on my board with two separate antennas and use one for the slave and the other for master.  Has anyone done this before?  Is there a better alternative?

Thanks

  • You want to know if having two of the CC2541's (Texas Instruments - 2.4-GHz Bluetooth low energy module) with their own separate antennas on one PCB will work correctly.

Are these chips designed to be co-located like this together on a small PCB?

Will there be too much interference?

TI please help address these questions.

    Thank you.

  • Two chips will work, as there is freq hopping independent on each one.

Another alternative (somewhat limited) is for slave to have connection, and then broadcast out data. HR sensors do this, connecting to the phone, but also pushing small 20bytes of data  to the treadmill for example.   This is limited to 20 bytes every 100ms.

There is also some standards work, allowing a slave to connect to more than one device, but this is not ready yet.

Another option may be to run the iOS as slave. I've heard this is possible, but I have not tried it yet.

  • Thanks Greg.  We moved forward with a design that has two radios on the same board.  Looking forward to the BTLE 4.1 spec being supported by your stack that will allow multiple devices from one radio, also the higher speed burst data transfer.

Any word on when either of those would be ready?

  • Hi Richard,

I don't have details on the 4.1 timeline I can give out currently.

With latest 1.4 stack release we have increased throughput with this
