CC2540 mini-DK with Nesus 7 Tablet

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2540

Hi,

we are working on Bluetooth 4.0 Low energy feature of CC2540 controller and using CC2540 mini-DK (USB Dongle, Keyfob and CC Debugger). So while scanning peripheral devices using BTool, connection can be established with Micromax Canvas 2 Plus-A110Q model very easily But we can't get slave BDA for Nexus 7 in BTool, means no connection.

Is there any android or iOS app which can support BLE 4.0 for Nexus 7? or how can we connect Nexus 7 with USB Dongle directly?

Regards

JAY PATEL

  • Hi Jay,

I use "BLE Device Monitor" from Google Play with my Nexus 7. That works very well, no need for a USB dongle.

  • Hi Peder,

    Thanks for quick revert.

we checked Keyfob with Nexus 7 using 'BLE Device Monitor' Google app. It's working very well.

But we want to pair any Smart Phone having BLE 4.0 with USB Dongle.

When we scan any other BLE Smart Phone in BTool with USB Dongle, it can detect only Micromax Canvas 2 plus-A110Q but can't detect Nexus 7, iphone 4S and Samsung S3.

  • Hi Jay,

I think I understand better now. Do you want to set up your Smart Phone to be a BLE peripheral that can be scanned with BTool + CC2540 USB dongle?

I guess that you will need a specific android app for that. I know we've done this with iOS devices.

  • Hi Peder,

thanks for kind suggestion, and yaa we will develop our own app for that in future...

    Right Now at development stage,

we have compared the specs of Micromax Canvas 2 plus-A110Q, Samsung S3, iPhone 4s, Nexus 7 but only Samsung S3 is officially assuring for Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy.

But it's little confusing that USB Dongle can detect micromax-A110Q in BTool very easily without any app but no other Smart Phones.

I am not sure but it means while scanning any device in BTool, it should detect those devices only which is having BLE 4.0...

and the app you suggested 'BLE Device Monitor' is supporting-working nicely in Nexus 7, Samsung S3 but is not supported for Micromax-A110Q.

Is there any authenticate details that which Phones can support BLE 4.0?

  • Hi Jay,

My experience is that most phones designed for Android 4.3 supports BLE, and some that can be upgraded to 4.3. The support in 4.4 is significantly better.

The challenge you will generally face is that most Android phones do not support peripheral mode and hence will not be scannable by BTool. This is well supported in iOS already.
