0603 Power Supply Decoupling Capacitor

Reading the Coin Cell whitepaper I am trying to reduce the peak pulse currents affect on my coin cell battery.  I was going to add a 10uF cap (as the regulator o/p cap) situated on the opposite end of the board from the antenna.  However it is an 0603 part and I know typically 0402 components are preferred for RF.  So theres a bit of a conflict with what I should do.  What would Ti recommend?

  • Hello Kevin,

Changing the package size for the component changes the parasitics. This can affect the device performance if the components on the RF path are changed. However, if you plan to change only the power supply decoupling capacitor, as long as the PCB design and layout guidelines for decoupling are followed, it is OK to use a 0603 component. Please check the frequency characteristics and parasitics on the component datasheet to be sure that the decoupling will be effective.

    Regards,

    SS

  • A 10uF cap won't help much. The white paper suggested a 100uF cap. There is an empty footprint for a 1412 tantalum cap on the sensor tag. Use that instead.
