Hi,

I am trying to program the CC22541 based bluetooth module from LSR. http://www.lsr.com/downloads/products/330-0134.pdf

I am using CC Debugger and Free Evaluation version of "IAR Work bench for 8051". I am trying to program the CC22541 to work with UART protocols so that I can interface it with MSP430F5438A's UART (Txd and RxD).

I downloaded the "SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART" files from the TI website processors.wiki.ti.com/.../CC254X_WITH_EXT_MCU

The problem is that I am unable to compile the code , download and debug it .

Have someone worked on this issue before ? I am getting the following error

Do you download and install TI BLE stack first? You have to put SimpleBLEPeripheral _UART to the BLE example folder.

I downloaded the zip file "SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART.zip" , unzip it , opened the Projects Folder -> "ble" folder--> CC2541DB folder --> here I got two project files

SimpleBLEPeripheral.ewd and SimpleBLEPeripheral.ewp... I tired to open it with IAR but get error.

If you download and install BLE stack, it will create a folder at C:\Texas Instruments\BLE-CC254x-1.4.0. You should put SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART example under C:\Texas Instruments\BLE-CC254x-1.4.0\Projects\ble\SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART and open C:\Texas Instruments\BLE-CC254x-1.4.0\Projects\ble\SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART\CC2541DB\SimpleBLEPeripheral.eww with IAR to build it.

Hi,

I managed to program the TiWi-uB1 using CC Debugger and IAR workbench for 8051. I downloaded the "SimpleBLEPeripheral" programs from TI website and programmed the TiWi-uB1 and ran it but the USB dongle plugged into my laptop did not recognize the TiWi module. I also used BT tools to detect the TiWi-uB1 but no luck.

1. I want to program the TiWi module as a UART so that it can communicate with my external microcontroller over RxD and TxD.

2. I am using windows 7 32 bit, and also trying to detect the TiWi module via USB based bluetooth dongle.

Please adivse what direction should I take from here!

1. SimpleBLEPeripheral SerialInterface example shows you how to interface with external MCU by UART TX/RX. You should study it first to know how it works.

2. After SimpleBLEPeripheral SerialInterface starts to advertise, any BLE central should recognize it. I suppose your USB based BLE dongle should recognize it too.

I downloaded the SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART software from the wiki website and did what you advised to do . The IAR opened the project with ewp but it is showing two files SerialInterface.c and serialinterface.h in grey color with cross sign X next to them.

What to do about this issue? Plus Can you advise what files should I study becuase there are so many files in this project. Can I get like a hex file of the firmware that can use to program this CC2541 for UART communication?

As you can see, there are some problems with "SerialInterface.c" and "serialInterface.h" . The code is not compiling and giving following errors

What is IAR version? The BLE 1.4.0 use IAR workbentch for 8051 version 8.20.

I installed IAR work bench for 8051 8.20.0. I tried SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART again but same result as I shown in the jpegs earlier in my posts.

Do you try to reinstall SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART and build with IAR 8.20 again? The project file might be modified by IAR 9 and cause the problem in IAR 8.20.

I tried again but same result. How can someone work with these really confusing tools? And Texas Instrument does only do enough to sell their junk products.

I copied "SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART folder" into c:\TexasInstrument\BLE-cc254x-1.4.0\Projects\ble\SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART

Yes, I agee with you that TI has lots to improve. When I started to use these Stack, I spent lots of efforts. That's why I help people here. If you don't mind, let's stay calm and try again. I would like to know if you can build any BLE stack 1.4.0?example, e.g. original SimpleBLEPeripheral?

In your error message, your file path is incorrect. please copy "SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART\SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART patch\Projects\ble\common\npi\npi_np\npi.c" into C:\Texas Instruments\BLE-CC254x-1.4.0\Projects\ble\common\npi\npi_np

and copy "SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART\SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART patch\Projects\ble\SimpleBLEPeripheral\Source\(all files)"

into C:\Texas Instruments\BLE-CC254x-1.4.0\Projects\ble\SimpleBLEPeripheral\Source.

I do not have SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART, I have SimpleBLEPeripheral folder.

You can download File:SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART.zip from processors.wiki.ti.com/.../File:SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART.zip. After you open File:SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART.zip, you will see SimpleBLEPeripheral and common folders inside. Then, follow the 2 steps:

1. Rename the original SimpleBLEPeripheral to SimpleBLEPeripheral_ORI and unzip the SimpleBLEPeripheral in SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART.zip to C:\Texas Instruments\BLE-CC254x-1.4.0\Projects\ble folder.
2. unzip common folder to C:\Texas Instruments\BLE-CC254x-1.4.0\Projects\ble folder too.
3. Open SimpleBLEPeripheral project and build again.

I downlaoded the SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART.zip. The SimpleBLEPeripheral folder is located inside. This is how I got there
SimpleBLEPeripheral_UARTpatch ---> Projects--->ble--->SimpleBLEPeripheral_UARTpatch--->projects--->ble--->simpleBLEPeripheral

Now, SimpleBLEPeripheral got three folders CC2540DB, CC33541DB and Source.

I need to unzip it to rename the folder SimpleBLEPeripheral to SimpleBLEPeripheral_ORI then zio the whole thing again and unzip it again in

C:\Texas Instruments\BLE-CC254x-1.4.0\Projects\ble folder.

I did all this but again got the same cursed error

Do you unzip "common" folder in SimpleBLEPeripheral_UART.zip to C:\Texas Instruments\BLE-CC254x-1.4.0\Projects\ble folder too.

I think I got it compiled. I can not believe it. I finally compiled the Texas Instrument's shity product. I forgot what was my goal.oh yes I want to program the CC22541 as a UART. I am attaching the jpeg of the compiled winodow . Can you take a look at it and let me know does it look right? Plus what should be my next steps. How can I put this code into CC22541?

I am using TiWi-uB1 from another great company like TI called LSR. I know that I will program the chip using CCDebugger . But How will I know that the chip will work as a UART before even I connect the external microcontroller to it

So, I downloaded the "CC2541_SmartRF_HostTestRelease_All" Firmware file to CC2541 bluetooth module module. According to TI's documents, the CC2541 is now programmed to talk to external microcontroller via SPI or UART BUS.

I want to interface it with microchip PIC18F. Now how should I do. Please let me know what steps should I take from here.

You can read BLE Device Monitor User Guide and also TI_BLE_Vendor_Specific_HCI_Guide.pdf in document folder to know the HCI command runs between them.

That is cool. But I also want to know that how can I proceed towards writing the code for an external micro to talk to bluetooth module. Do I need some kind of bluetooth stack for the micro too. I am using microchip's micro to do this.

Or it will be just plain C code interpreting the commands given in the "TI_BLE_Vendor_Specific_HCI_Guide.pdf". Can you provide me some kind of example code even for a TI micontroller. It will be help fiul.

Hi,

You can have a look at Btool source code to understand the code flow to talk to CC2541 over UART. Although Btool source code is not a MCU code, It will be a good point to start to understand how commands are sent and how events are handled. You can packatize commands and events as per the "TI_BLE_Vendor_Specific_HCI_Guide.pdf"

I want to communicate over SPI bus. You guys have put so much confused information out there that its very difficult to pin down which direction to take. for example I also found the followin glink

Hi,

SerialBLE Bridge doesnt use HCI interface(commands & events) to communicate while HostTestApp uses HCI interface. In fact SerialBLE Bridge sends custom commands and events (with prefix headers) as described in Wiki page. Please have a look at the code to understand these commands.

Now if your sole purpose is to have SPI communication between CC2541 and an extrnal MCU, you can use SerialBLE Bridge. For this you need to configure the SerialBLE Bridge to be the SPI Slave and use your MCU as SPI Master.

Unfortunately we only have the documentation as described in Wiki page above. Bu the source code for the same is fairly simple enough with comments, so you should not have much trouble understanding it.

1) It looks like that the "SerialBLEbridge" comes as a SPI slave. Can you please take a look at it because you advised me that it is in SPI Master mode and I have to change it to SPI slave.

Hi,
I am unable to find the complete description of the commands that are needed by the external microcontroller to communicate with SimpleBLEPeripheral via SPI bus. I programmed the C22541 with the firmware available on the following website. Can somebody verify that this program comes as a slave SPI. I read one of its file "hal_board_cfg.h" And it looks like its a Slave SPI device.

Where are these commands located? if their description is in SimpleBLEPeripheral then what is the name of the file? The SimpleBLEPeripheral wiki document does discuss any commands.

Hi,

What I meant was that CC2541 should be the SPI slave and the other MCU(Host MCU) which you connect to the CC2541 should be SPI Master. You can use the simpleBLEbridge application itself in SPI Slave mode.

The commands used to set the external MCU as master depends entirely on external MCU used. Normally we configure it as SPI master with a rate of 1M and in 4 pin mode with chip Select as Active Low.

You did not confirm that the SerialBLEbridge by default comes as a Slave SPI program. Is it?

Plus where can I find examples of the command set that External microcontroller needs to be programmed with so that it can talk to mighty CC2541.

Are the commands discussed in the somewhere in the SerialBLEbridge project? Can you give some examples?

Hi,

SerialBLEBridge uses UART by default, which you will have to modify for SPI interface.

You can give commands in this format <Number of bytes Paylod><Payload Bytes>

E.g 0x05:0x01:0xFF:0x43:0x54:0x12

where 0x05 signifies the number of bytes of payload and 0x01:0xFF:0x43:0x54:0x12 is the payload.

You need to look that serialInterface.c file to understand how the Ack is send and Tx from serialBLEBridge is done.

1. SerialBLEbridge comes as SPI interface too . Here is the code from one of its file "hal_board_cfg.h". Please read the first line U1CSR = 0; I do not think it needs to be modified to work as a SPI. when you install SerialBLEbridge, you get two options SPI and UART. Please download it and open the project in IAR8.20. Let confirm this, its very important.

Thanks for sending me the format. How will the SerialBLEbridge know that I want cc2541 to advertise , or to pair . I meant how would CC2541 know that what am I trying to do!

I just test on it and everything builds successfully. I suggest you to remove everything and reinstall to test again.

Reinstall BLE stack v1.4.1 and download BLE Bridge Patch.zip from processors.wiki.ti.com/.../File:BLE_Bridge_Patch.zip to build and test again.
