CC2640 Max Transmit Distance

Hi Team,

I am looking to get a rough estimate on the maximum transmit distance using the CC2640.

The current application uses CC2530 ZigBEE + CC2591 Range extender. We are exploring lower power solutions since this is a battery application for the next gen design. Target range is at least 100 meters.

I used a basic calculator to estimate the distance with +5dBm Tx and -97dBm Rx sensitivity. I tried using the calculator here: http://www.afar.net/rf-link-budget-calculator/ putting 0dB in for the antenna gain. I got a range of around 0.1Mile. However, I don’t have enough information to get an accurate estimate so I was hoping to get some feedback from the team.

Does at least 100 meters sound reasonable?

Hi Matt,

Have you looked at this calculator found at the top of the forum: e2e.ti.com/.../375823 ?

100 m line of sight is absolutely possible with the CC2640.

A question on this calculator:

Is the range expected calculated horizontally outward from the transmitter?

The reason for my question is the application requires the transmitter to be mounted on a 100 meter high tower with the receiver on the ground.With the CC26xx BLE chipset and a Tx power of +5dBm I get around 130 meter distance. With the Tx sitting at 100m high I get, 35 meter distance.

Can I still get the 130 meter line of sight to ground with Tx sitting 100 meters off the ground?

Hi Matt,

Yes, that is correct. You will reach from the top of the tower to ground, but the horizontal range from the tower on ground level will not be great.
