You suppose to change advertData[] in simpleBLEBroadcaster.c

How do I change the service uuid from 16 to 128 bits?

I have my own breakout board for cc2541 with minimal components, similar to BLE113 from Bluegiga. I flashed the SimpleBLEPeripheral code onto it (with power saving option) and measured the consumption with a multimeter. It consumes on average 5.8 mA and 6.68mA when advertising.

I thought that my board was somehow faulty but I get the same readings from the BLE113.

The project:

1. I need to detect when a flip top cap is open or closed. To do that I have a reed sensor, normally open, connected to P0.0 and ground. Most of the time it will be closed.

2. When it flips it begins to advertise for a few seconds, then it stops and goes into a power saving mode.

3. There are no leds or other components/sensors in the circuit.

At this rate it wouldn’t last for a couple of days with a coin cell battery. Any ideas on what is causing such a high current draw?

You can try to use GAPRole_SetParameter( GAPROLE_ADVERT_OFF_TIME, sizeof( uint16 ), &gapRole_AdvertOffTime ) to set a shorter advertising duration. The default is 30.72 seconds.

Oh yeah I've done that. But even when it's not advertising the current consumption is very high, on average 5.8mA. The chip won't last a day on a coin cell battery. That can't be right?

Does your flip top cap would be opened and closed very often? If so, I don't think it is a good idea to use advertising every time you detect it open or close.

No I don't expect it to flip too often.

But my problem is even with the chip idle, with no reed sensor or anything else, it is still draining 5.8mA. Do you know why?

You should check if there is some current leaks on GPIO pins.

I'll try this when I'm at work in a couple of days and get back with the readings.

When it is advertising, I understand it is in active mode and consumption is higher, this is fine as I only expect it to happen only once in a few days and it would only advertise for a few seconds.

My concern is when it is not advertising it should be in power mode 2, if this is correct, it should only be draining 1uA as per data sheet but my reading shows 5.8mA.

All GPIOs have no connections except for P0.0 which is set to input and connected to ground through a reed sensor and it is most the time closed.

Do you enable POWER_SAVING in your application? By the way, do you remove connection between CC254x and CC debugger when you do this test?

Yes POWER_SAVING is enabled and cc debugger is unplugged.

Try to use register PxINP to set unused pins to tri-state.

If pin P0.0 is mostly connected to ground through the reed sensor as the cap is always closed, that can't be causing that much power consumption right?

Yes, it sounds that your P0.0 shouldn't consume that much power. However, you can try to disconnect it and check to confirm this.

It is still not working.

I tried the following with different boards:

1. Disconnected everything from GPIOs.
2. Set P0IMP, P2IMP and P2IMP to 0x00.
3. Set P0, P1 and P2 to 0.
4. POWER_SAVING is declared and osal_pwrmgr_device( PWRMGR_BATTERY ); is set.

While it is NOT advertising, the current reading is 0.18mA. As per datasheet, I'm supposed to be reading 1uA.

Any thoughts?

To set all GPIO to tri-state, you should set all of P0INP and P1INP to 0xFF, and P2INP to 0x1F.

Somehow I don't think it enters a power save mode. Is there a command to set PM2 or PM3?

If devices doesn't go to PM2, it will consume around 8mA not 1.8mA.

The datasheet says it should only consume 1 microamp not 1.8 milliamps

Yes, it is. So, if your device goes to sleeping mode, you won't see 1.8 milliamps. Instead, you will see around 7 or 8 millamps if CC254x is not under sleeping mode. I judge from your report, 1.8 mA in current consuming, to say it is not the problem that MCU does't goes to sleeping mode. If you all your GPIO are checked, you should check your crystal circuit or power.

Sorry are you saying if it was not in sleep mode it would be consuming 7 or 8 milliamps instead of 1.8?

Now I’m getting 1uA on start up!

When the chip is first powered, the current is around 1uA. When the reed closes, P0.0 is connected to ground the current spikes to about 0.2mA as expected (same as the keyfob left button being pressed down) , but when the reed opens (button released) it goes down to 35uA and not 1uA. Any Suggestions?

Does your reed output connected to a pull-high resister?

Then, I would suggest you use a pull-high resistor on the left side of reed.

Yes. You can try to use 10K ohm on R1. By the way, does your 3.0V mean VDD?

Yes, it will cause larger current consumption when you close the reed. If you want to reduce the impact, you can increase the pull-up resistor to 10M.

This is how I do it currently:

P0 = 0x01; // All pins on port 0 to low except for P0.0 (buttons)

Since you already set P0.0 as GPI (P0DIR = 0xFE), you can not output it to low by setting P0 = 0x01. Only GPO can do this output behavior.

So what is the correct way to set P0.0 to work with the pull-up resistor ?

You can set bit5 of P2INP to 0 and it will make P0 pull-up.

If I have a pull-up reed switch, the schematic I posted, connected to P0.0 to work as an interrupt. P0.0 has to be set as input with internal pull-up, correct?

As per user guide for cc2541, an input pin is set by default with a pull-up.

So, the following code should set it properly:

If you don't change PxINP and set a pin of CC254x as GPI, it's default is pullup. You can refer to CC254x user guide at www.ti.com/.../swru191f.pdf
