How do I connect a sensor with CC 2540 and program it to read data?

Thank you for your response. I found this on the documentation: "The SensorTag is a BLE peripheral slave device which runs on the CC2541 SensorTag hardware platform." does this mean I cant use the sensor tag with CC2540. I am not sure what the sensor use for communication. I am new to the whole thing and trying to learn my way in.

Yes, the sensor tag is only produced for the CC2541. I would recommend downloading the 1.4.1 stack: www.ti.com/blestack and reading through the Software Developer's Guide included with the installer.

I was wondering if I will have to use both the USB dongle and the Keyfob for this project ( connecting a sensor and reading the data from it). If not which one is preferable to use or if I will have to use both, what is the role of each?

Yes you will need to use something to connect to the sensor tag to read data over BLE. The best solutions are probably either:
- USB dongle which you could control via BTool (included with the installer), described here: www.ti.com/.../swru270c.pdf
- smart phone running Sensor Tag app: www.ti.com/.../appsAndPartners.html
