BLE to ZigBee messages with cc2650?

Hi everyone,

I am trying to make an easy project which involves BLE and ZigBee protocols, something like turn on a LED via BLE (in device 3), and then send a message via ZigBee to the "coordinator device"(device 1). I will add a picture to understand it easier:

So, I thought about implementing the cc2650 chip in the project (device 2), thinking that it was able to run simultaneously BLE and ZigBee. TI offers separate BLE and ZigBee stacks and it´s not possible to build both stacks into cc2650 because of the 128 KB flash memory (correct me if I am wrong).

Do you have any general suggestions which help me to make this eaasy project possible using the cc2650 over IAR Embedded Workbench IDE?

The possible solution is to connect CC2530+CC2541 together using UART to serve your application.

Hi Yikai,

1) I don´t know how to connect the two chips via UART, is there any software/hardware example to see how could it be their communication?
2) If the flash memory would have 256 KB , the problem of simultaneous running between BLE and ZigBee would be solved?

1. The default UART of XX2530 and CC2541 uses P0.2 as RX and P0.3 as TX. You can connect CC2530 P0.2 to CC2541 P0.3 and CC2530 P0.3 to CC2541 P0.2 for HW part. As for FW, you can refer to the API in hal_uart.c to do read and write from UART.
2. Even CC2650 has 256K flash version, I think it is very difficult for your application. Because the is only one RF TX/RX circuit, BLE and Zigbee might not work at the same time.

How about using BLE & Zigbee at different time slot (as to the CPU)?

If it can switch fast enough, the user will not be able to notice the switch? Here by "fast enough", I'm thinking of less than 1 second, but I'm not sure if BLE or Zigbee stack can re-init that fast.

I think it won't be fast enough but I can't verify it. The flash size of CC2650 is not enough to run both Z-Stack and BLE Stack on it at the same time.
