RF Ref. Design Alterations

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2640

I am using the CC2650EM-4XS Ref. Design with the CC2640. I am prepared to keep the design identical but am having trouble finding some of the RF components in small quantities. I am in South Africa and the shipping cost from Mouser and Digikey is too high. Specifically, there is a 2nH inductor, shown below, that has a minimum quantity of 250. I have found an alternative but am understandably worried about the effect it may have on the circuit.

The original Murata (LQG15HS2N0S02D) inductor specs:

The proposed replacement from TE Connectivity 3650 series (36501E2N0JTDG):

It is a higher quality inductor with better tolerance, higher min Q factor and SRF all in the same 0402 package. The only potential problems I see is the lower DC resistance. I don't have any RF design experience so any input would be appreciated, what are the chances this will greatly affect performance? I can deal with small loss in range...

  • Hello,

I've looped in a member of our HW team, but you should consult with a qualified RF engineer when designing your own RF antenna layout.

    Best wishes
  • Thanks, I was hoping this one change would not affect performance too significantly. I don't have the resources to have an RF engineer at the moment so I hope to find some advice here...
  • Hello Cameron,

We cannot comment on how it will affect the performance without testing it.

However, based on the specs, it seems like a reasonable replacement. It is generally a good idea to stock components with slightly higher and lower values around the value specified in reference design to optimize the RF performance if the same components and layout as reference design is not being used.

Be sure the follow the layout on TI reference design for good RF performance.
