Bluetooth Stack on the BeagleBone Black BLE/ WiFi Cape

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIBLUETOOTHSTACK-SDK, CC2650

I'm a bit confused in general as to how much of bluetooth is software stack dependent and what is limited by the hardware (chip-rom/antenna).

For example, I have the B/LE/Smart Cape, but would like to run a Classic FTP Profile application..  is this impossible due to the hardware, or is it a matter of modifying and/or creating a custom bluetooth software stack?

According to the description on the TIBLUETOOTHSTACK-SDK page, it says it can run only on the CC256x, and doesn't support FTP, yet this page shows the TI Bluetooth Core Stack supporting FTP on the CC256x, but not available except on theAM335x SDK.     Why wouldn't the Stack/FTP profile work on any CC256x platform?

Since I already purchased the CC2650 based BLE Cape, what options are there for fast data transfer (1Mbps+)?

  • Hello,

Please note that CC256x and CC26xx are different products. The latter if BLE single mode with no support for classic BT. You can not achieve faster than the BLE PHY data rate (1Mbps) and effective transmission is far less due to required timing & signaling.

If it will help, I can move your question to the CC256x forum for more dedicated support of classic BT or dual mode BT operation.

    Best wishes
  • Thanks, perhaps my question is more appropriate in the CC256x forum..

I'm trying to decide if purchasing any CC256x based board will support the FTP profile (as implemented in either the rom or the software stack). The current shield I have uses CC2650 based, but data rate is what I'm after, not lower power.
  • Hello,

Yes, please post Smart-Ready or dual-role BT questions in the CC256x forum for the fastest response time!

Although you didn't articulate a data rate requirement, transferring files is generally not a good user experience with BLE; in that case using a device with EDR capability would be suggested (CC256x).

    Best wishes
