Reducing power consumption on cc2541

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2541, BLE-STACK, CC2640

Hello,

I'm using the HIDEmuKbd example to emulate an HID keyboard with cc2541 and it works well. Now I'm trying to reduce power consumption to run it on a cR2032 coin cell. From the datasheet I read that cc2541 has to run at 32Mhz inorder to use RF functions. Is it mandatory that I run on 32MHz when using BLE functions or it is recommended over the internal 16MHz due to accuracy and reliability concerns. Any tips on reducing power consumption?  I have read the software development guide. It has a few points like adjusting slave latency and connection interval etc. Other than these are there any other ways to reduce power consumption.

Thanks

  • Hello,

The data sheet is correct w.r.t 32MHz XTAL usage requirements. The BLE-Stack SW is power optimized in the default configuration, e.g., HIDEmuKbd project.

For HID, it's generally advisable to use slave latency. Beyond that, make sure your unused IO pins are configured correctly as per the CC254x User's Guide.

For the best low power operation, I would suggest using CC2640.

    Best wishes
  • Okay...so that means that if I switch to 16MHz internal oscillator....BLE's not gonna work right?
  • Correct. Please see "4.4 Oscillators and Clocks" in the UG (SWRU191):
    ..
The choice of oscillator allows a trade-off between high accuracy in the case of the crystal oscillator and
low power consumption when the RC oscillator is used. Note that operation of the RF transceiver requires
that the 32-MHz crystal oscillator is used.
    ..

    Best wishes

EDIT: correct typo in UG doc ID.
