I wonder if there's any difference in power consumption when a device is in Broadcaster role compared to Peripheral role. Beside a difference in the advertising packets, are there differences in internal hardware configurations?

Hello Steve,

I encourage you to take a look at the "Measuring Bluetooth Smart Power Consumption" App Note which is available on the TI BLE Wiki: www.ti.com/ble-wiki. This app note includes a power calculator spreadsheet where you can compare connection vs. broadcast (Advertising) states.

HW wise, it's the same radio. You can find more details on the CC26xx Radio in the TRM (SWCU117).

Thanks. However, what I mean is whether a peripheral consumes more/less power during advertising compared to a broadcaster. That is, no connection takes place - both the broadcaster and the peripheral simply advertise.

All things being equal in terms of number of TX bytes & Adv rate, the peripheral (connectable) will consume more energy due to the RX after TX (i.e., while listening for connect or scan requests). A broadcaster is non-connectable, thus it does not activate the receiver during an Adv event.

If you manipulate broadcast content, the TX power consumption might be different to advertising.

Thanks JSX & Chen,
Here is my doubt is that when i use SimpleBLEBroadcast and SImpleBLEPeripheral i get the sane power consmuption of 6.1mA. Shouldn't there be difference between cause SimpleBLEPeripheral used RX as well ?

When you measure power consumption of peripheral, does it connect to central device or it was doing advertising only?

It was doing the ADV only.
Also I'm not able to see any RX current on waveform for SimpleBLEPeripheral (connectable packets), I understand RX time depends on ADV interval but how exactly does it depend ? I am using 313 ms ADV interval ?
Also, how about if i use SimpleBLEPeripheral as a Broadcaster only, whats the way to do it? I have removed Scan response.

I suspect there is current leakage on your CC2640 pins. Do you check it?
