Customer was wondering if TI can provide any information relating to the implementation and qualification of the random number generating function HCI_LE_Rand on the CC2640. We are trying to assess the suitability of this function as an entropy source within our proprietary security model. I can’t find anything in the Bluetooth SIG qualification tests which explicitly test the HCI’s random number generation feature. The only thing I saw was in the CORE specification which states that the random number generator should be tested against [FIPS SP800-22] (section 2 of volume 2, part H). Any information you can provide on this is appreciated.
My response was the CC2640 features a random number generator as detailed in Chapter 16 of CC13xx, CC26xx SimpleLink Wireless MCU Technical Reference Manual (Rev. F).
The TRNG provides a built-in self-test that checks the number of consecutive bits sampled to provide the statistical robustness required by FIPS 140. System alarms are generated based on feedback from this test.
Please confirm that is used by the HCI_LE_RAND command.
