CC2564: Sending Data to iOS Device over BLE

Hi team,

We are interested in using the CC2564 in our product. Does using the CC2564 with an Apple iOS device require an MFi chip?

We would like to be able to send diagnostic logs from our product to our phone and be able to send firmware updates from our phone to our product.

Which BLE profiles would be necessary for this?

    Hi Akash,

    You are correct. There is no MFi requirement for connecting to iOS device using BLE.

    There is no standard BLE profile or service for OAD. For the requirements mentioned above, you will have to implement a custom GATT based service with custom characteristics.

    Are updates typically done over BLE or Bluetooth Classic on the CC2564?

    Hi Akash,

    The OAD implementation really depends on the host's (MCU/MPU) ability to switch to a new SW image. As you know, this varies from product to product. Since the CC256x works with a wide range of hosts, there is no standard method or documentation for OAD like there is for Wireless MCUs.

    Either BLE or classic Bluetooth can be used for updates. The tradeoff here being that BLE will have lower throughput so it will take longer to download a new update. Whereas, the Bluetooth Classic (using SPP) will require MFi for iOS devices (not needed for android or PC). This will cost some real estate on the PCB and higher BOM cost.
