CC2640: The HCI interface

Hi,

I am interested in learning about the HCI interface in CC2640. Is there a good document that outlines this? particularly I want to learn what physical interface the interface is over. Based on what I have read it's a uart interface, is this correct? If it's correct, where can I find the code for the code for uart driver on the Cortex-M3 that facilitates the communication with Cortex-M0 core (Radio chip)?

If you install BLE Stack 2.2.1, you can refer to TI_BLE_Vendor_Specific_HCI_Guide.pdf in docs folder.

Thanks for your response, however it did not answer my question. On the host side in cc2640, below the HCI layer, there must be some sort of driver module that transports the packets over a physical medium (be it UART, USB, etc) to the controller. I want to know the mechanics of how this piece of software is: is it actually UART, if so, is there a document for it? Also I am interested in seeing where this code resides within my project. Thanks!

Hi,

I don't plan on using the CC2640 as a network processor. I did a little digging on my own, and it seems that the interface between M0 and M3 is a doorbell. And that M0 only has the physical layer, while M3 has LL and up. Could someone please confirm this?

Hello Ali,

The CC2640 and CC2640R2F are wireless MCUs with the BLE Host and Controller integrated. The HCI interface is an internal API to the TI BLE Stack. You are correct in that there is a doorbell interface between the Cortex-M0 RF Core processor and the application Cortex-M3. In addition to the doorbell, the cores can both access the main 20kB system RAM. Note that the HCI interface is not directly exposed to the application although certain HCI and Vendor Specific HCI commands can be sent by the application.
