CC2541: Development possible outside IAR?

I am looking to do some simple peripheral dev work on the CC2541, no relations to BLE or the BLE Stack. This work includes GPIO, Timers and SPI development.

Is this possible outside of IAR, or for free?

To note, I have found the following E2E answers related to this topic, all of which indicate IAR is the only solution for this 8051 MCU -

TI E2E - CC2541: IAR and GCC

BLE Stack only supported in IAR

TI E2E - Software for programming CC2541

You have to get the 30-day license to IAR

TI E2E - CC2541 with Code Composer Studio

It is 8051, IAR is required

TI E2E - how to use CCS to develop CC2541 BLE

CCS doesn't support 8051

TI E2E - Programming CC2541

TI's developed stack for the CC2541 BLE is in IAR

Hi Justin,

Yes it is possible using SDCC. I have made a few simple projects myself for CC2541, CC2543 and CC2545 (both for peripherals and also RF). You can use these examples as starting points:

Debugging is not available though, so you need to something a bit more crude using LEDs or printf() or similar.

I haven't touched it in years but I'm sure I compiled a few programs without the BLE simply using the free IAR Kickstart version (limited to 4K) www.iar.com/ew8051

The problem is only if you try to use the BLE library which exceeds the 4K limit.

I did not know about SDCC, thank you. When I get my CC2541 SDCC demo complete (led blink, etc.) I will post.
