CC2541: CC2540 to CC2541 Migration

Part Number: CC2541
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2540

Hi,

I intend on using the CC2541 inplace of the CC2540 and keep the PCB as it is, PCB antenna and all the rest of the components around this CC chip stay the same too.

I do not use the I2C (CC2540) nor the USB (CC2540), so what happens if I left pin 4 (DVDD_USB) floating, does this affect power consumption in any way?

Also, what is the link budget for the CC2541 in dB please?

As my current PCB antenna works fine with the CC2540, will it also work the same with the CC2541?

Many thanks in advance.

Best regards,

  • Hi Hamid,

I suggest following the CC2540 Keyfob Reference Design for proper non-USB layout.

You can find the link budget in the CC2541 data sheet, see the RF RECEIVE SECTION for different RX operating modes.

The antenna should be fine with CC2541.

    Best wishes
  • Hi JXS,

Thank you for your very quick reply to my post and answers.

I intend on using the CC2541 in a board that was designed to use the CC2540, and as pin 4 is a NC with the CC2540, I just need to know that if I replaced the CC2540 with the CC2541 then the DVDD_USB will be floating, will that affect current consumption at all?  Sadly the keyfob reference circuit does not give me an answer as it uses the CC2540 and hence pin 4 in a NC.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Hamid,

Sounds like you are mixing up the two part, CC2540 has DVDD_USB on pin 4, on CC2541 this pin is NC. On the latter part the pin is not physically bonded internally, so it does not matter what the pin is connected to. On the CC2540 it is also ok to leave this pin floating as long as you do not enable USB.

    Cheers,
    Fredrik
  • Many thanks Fredrik, this does actually clarify the issue.
