CC2564MODNEM: 0402 vs 0603 SMD Package

Part Number: CC2564MODNEM

The reference design proposes mostly 0402 devices for resistors and capacitors. Understandably, because of the RF nature of the design.

I would like to know if anyone had successfully implemented the reference design with 0603 devices instead of 0402.

If not, any thoughts on that matter would be appreciated!

  • Geffrard,

We have assigned your post to the relevant engineer and will get back to you.
  • Hi Geffrard,

I hope all is well. There should be no issue in changing the by pass capacitors and resistors for 0603 SMD components. On the RF side, it is also possible to change to 0603 however there are a couple of things from the design side and certification re-use that you need to consider. First from the design side:
    1) When you use a larger package part, the parasitics of the component increase. That means that you need to consider this when optimizing the RF matching and layout. What you will get component wise may not be the same as a n 0402 package as the parasitics are different. It is feasible to design the RF with the larger package, no issue, but care must be taken.

From the regulatory point of view:
    1) in order to re-use the modular certification, you cannot deviate from the RF path. That is, the FCC is fairly stringent on ensuring that the RF path to the antenna is maintained. Both I shape and components in the RF path.
    2) note that you are allowed to change the matching components to the antenna for optimization. However a size change needs to be discussed with the regulatory house to ensure no issues.
    3) On the point or regulatory re-use, ensure you are using the same antenna that we are.

    Thanks,
    Riz
