LAUNCHXL-CC2640R2: Simple peripheral example for BLE5?

I see many tutorials referencing a folder with BLE5 example projects but this is not available under my latest CC2640R2SDK install. How do I get my hands on a BLE5 project that will eventually be used to port an existing CC2650 Sensortag project?

Other than SIMPLELINK-CC2640R2-SDK, you also have to download and install SIMPLELINK-CC2640R2-BLE5-EVAL from to get BLE5 examples for LAUNCHXL-CC2640R2. By the way, CC2650 cannot support BLE5.

Hi GreenAndGrey,

You can see both BLE-Stack and BLE5-Stack examples projects. in the SimpleLink CC2640R2 SDK v1.40.00.45. The BLE5-Stack in this release is our production-certified Bluetooth 5 High Speed mode release.

Or, as YiKai mentioned, you can also request access to the SimpleLink CC2640R2 SDK v1.50.00.71 which has the BLE5-Stack component for evaluation only.

I have SimpleLink CC2640R2 SDK v1.50, but I'll revert to SimpleLink CC2640R2 SDK v1.40 for now.

Also, is on-chip OAD available for the BLE5 stack now? I'm looking ahead in our design and we don't have external flash so would we be restricted to using BLE 4.2 and the older stack only?

FYI- we have a custom board with the CC2650 (running TI's BLE Stack 2.1) that we are looking to replace with the CC2640R2F.

We do not ship an On-chip OAD example for the BLE5-Stack. Which Bluetooth 5 features does your application require?

We don't need a specific BLE5 feature but I was attempting to stay on the latest SDK version.
It looks like on-chip OAD is not even supported with the BLE5 stack so I will use the BLE 4.2 SDK.

Hi GreenAndGrey,

If you aren't using the BLE5-Stack features, I would recommend sticking to the BLE-Stack. More of the BLE-Stack is in ROM so you will have more flash available to your application. You can use the BLE-Stack in the SimpleLink CC2640R2 SDK v1.50.00.58 to stay on the latest BLE-Stack release.
